Biography and Priestly Journey

Early life and vocation

Rev. Fr. Professor Emmanuel Matthew Paul Edeh was born on 20 May 1947 in Akpugo, Nkanu West Local Government Area, Enugu State, Nigeria to Mr. Joseph Edeh Ani Onovo and Mrs. Elizabeth Omeogo (Mama Omeogo). His birth was considered extraordinary and marked by local interpretations of destiny, reflecting his future impact on society. Fr. Edeh’s primary education began at Holy Angels Catholic Primary School, Akpugo, followed by secondary studies at Holy Ghost Juniorate, Ihiala. ​ These early formative years nurtured both his faith and intellectual capacities.

Seminary formation and ordination

He pursued formal seminary training at Bigard Memorial Seminary, which is affiliated with the Pontifical Urban University in Rome, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Divinity (B.D.) in 1976. Later, Fr. Edeh advanced his academic formation at DePaul University, Illinois, USA, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), Master of Arts (M.A.), and Ph.D. in Philosophy (Metaphysics) by 1984. He also holds a professional certificate in Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) from Loyola University Medical Center in Illinois, USA.  He was ordained a Catholic priest on 19 April 1976 for the Congregation of the Holy Ghost (Spiritans) in Akpugo, Enugu State, beginning a pastoral ministry that would blend deep spirituality with social development.

Parishes served and ministerial roles

Fr. Edeh’s first pastoral assignment was at the Holy Ghost Juniorate, Ihiala, where he served as Assistant Parish Priest, teacher, and school secretary. Over time, his ministry expanded into education, peace building, healthcare, philosophy, and global rehabilitation work (all grounded in Catholic service).  He became: Priest in charge of the Pilgrimage Centre of Eucharistic Adoration and Special Marian Devotion, later declared an International Sanctuary (the first of its kind in Africa). He became Founder of multiple religious congregations including: Sisters of Jesus the Saviour, Fathers of Jesus the Saviour and Contemplatives of Jesus the Saviour (Monks and Nuns).  

Key achievements and milestones

Fr. Edeh’s vocation is marked by an integrative mission of faith, education, peace, and human upliftment as evidenced by the following attainments:

  • Advocate for peaceful conflict resolution and rehabilitation in Nigeria and beyond, including partnership efforts with global humanitarian bodies.
  • Pioneer in African thought leadership through his book Igbo Metaphysics, articulating inherent dignity and peace as human fundamentals.
  • Founder of the Madonna International Charity Peace Award (MICPA) to recognize global peace and humanitarian efforts.
  • Conferred with the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) in 2008 by President of Nigeria, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua for his contributions to education and national development.
